Heading out of town on a summer vacation? The last thing you want is to be worrying about your home while you’re away. Here are simple steps you can take to prepare your home for an extended absence: 

*Unplug small appliances and electronic devices (routers, televisions, computers, unused chargers, etc.)

*Switch the water heater to “vacation” mode

*Turn off water valves to the dishwasher, washing machine, and all sinks

*Set your thermostat to a warmer temperature

*Make sure your smoke detectors are functioning

*Leave an emergency contact number with a neighbor

*Dispose of any food and take out the kitchen trash

*Run your garbage disposal with a half-cup of vinegar and some water

*Ask a friend or neighbor to water your plants

*Hold mail and newspapers

*Put lights around your house on timers

*Check that all windows and doors are locked
